There are many of us who look forward to the winter and transforming into snow bunnies. We happily don our woolen hats, gloves, scarfs and boots in joyful anticipation of ski trips, building snowmen and having epic snowball fights. Or cuddling up with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book by the fire before going to bed. Unfortunately, this is not the case for those of us who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD.

SAD typically begins at the start of fall when the days become shorter and colder and will continue until spring when the days get longer and warmer. Although there are those who are affected by SAD during the spring and summer, the majority are afflicted during the fall and winter months. The symptoms can include:

Depression

Irritability

Tiredness or low energy

Not wanting to be around people and/or difficulties getting along with others

Hypersensitivity

Feeling heavy

Not wanting to get out of bed

Craving fatty foods or high carb foods

Weight gain

This can also wreak havoc with your intention manifestation practices. Doing intention work requires a lot of energy and if you suffer from SAD, drumming up the energy required is hard enough. Even worse, the energy that you may be putting into the intention can be fraught with depression and/or anxiety which can put the kibosh on just about any work you are attempting to do. While there are medical therapies that can help, there are also spiritual therapies that you can use right now to help to counter the ill effects of SAD. Develop an Appreciation of the Dark

The loss of light is probably the biggest triggers of Winter SAD. For those who thrive in the spring and summer, the world seems like a bright and sunny place filled with life, warmth and energy. The trees are flush with green leaves, flowers are in bloom, the world is brightened by the sunlight and the days seem endless. When the fall and winter set in, the trees become bare, the flowers are gone and in comparison, the world can seem like a dark, cold and gloomy place which is easy to understand from a physical, mental and emotional standpoint. However, spiritually this could not be further from the truth.

The darkness that fall and winter bring are opportunities for new growth. Consider the following:

Children are conceived and grow to fruition in the darkness of the womb before being birthed into the outer world.

A plant seed germinates in the darkness of the earth where it is nurtured. Roots nestle into the earth, absorbing nutrition as the stem grows until it springs from the earth to flourish and bloom.

We sleep in the dark and as we sleep, our organs rest, our bodies heal and our brains process the information it took in that day.

The dark is a very powerful and healing place to be and the fall and winter can be the perfect time to plant the “seeds” for what you hope to manifest in the spring. But first we need to get your energy levels up. Here are three techniques to bring the energy of the Sun to re-brighten your life. They are designed for people with different skill sets so that hopefully at least one of them will be beneficial. The best way to do these exercises is to read them into a recording device such as the one on your phone and then play it back so you can relax while listening to the instructions or use the video at the end of the article to engage in uplifting meditations that bring the energy of the Sun back to you.

The Light Switch

This technique is for those who are visual and/or imaginative.

  • Close your eyes and relax.
  • Set your intentions to receive only the safe amount of sunlight that you need.
  • Imagine that there is a wall in front of you with a light switch.
  • Imagine that there is a label over the light switch that says, “Sunlight”.
  • In your mind, reach out and flip the switch to the “on” position.
  • Imagine sunlight safely surrounding and infusing you with the nurturing and empowering energy that you need. That it purifies you of all adverse energies and restores your peace and Divine balanced energy. When you feel better, flip the switch to the “off” position.

You can return whenever you like if you need more. If necessary, you can leave it on but always with the intentions of receiving safe amounts of energy so that you don’t get jittery. If that happens, send any excess energy into the Earth to be recycled at Her discretion.

Feeling the Heat of the Sun

This is for those who are more feeling than seeing and who are highly sensitive to outside energies such as empaths. Many empaths are able to feel but may be challenged when it comes to visualization.

Sit back and relax

Set your intentions to receive only the safe amount of sunlight that you need.

Imagine that you feel the heat of the Sun on your feet and that it’s warm and nurturing and purifying of you of all adverse energies.

Allow the heat of the Sun to gently travel up your legs, warm your hips and spread upward through your torso

Allow the heat to move up to your shoulders and down the hands and fingers letting the warmth of the sunlight restore you.

Allow the heat to move up the neck and warm your face as it travels over your head and down your back.

Always with the intention of receiving only safe amounts, soak up the warmth of the sunlight until you feel better and then let it go.

Evoke the light

This technique is for those who are more in touch with their spiritual energy, Divine nature and prefer to use their own energy to resolve this challenge.

Close your eyes and relax.

Set your intentions to receive only the safe amount of sunlight that you need.

Repeat these words in your mind:

I invoke and evoke, request and accept all of the wonderful, positive, powerful properties, gifts, blessings and protection of beautiful, safe sunlight that comes forth from within me and safely infuses me, purifies me of all adverse energies, empowers me, lightens my mood and overall fills me with abundant good health and wellbeing so that I can safely and successfully complete my day.

Open your eyes and go about your day, energized by the rays of the sunlight within you.
