Do Not Be Afraid of Change. Be Afraid of Not Changing.
Do you ever feel like you are spinning your wheels and you are not really going anywhere? There is an anxiousness welling up inside of you with this low level, yet constant, fear that you do not have enough time because you are already behind. You think to yourself, I should have done this or I could have done that. At the beginning of the day life seems so new and full of promise and then somewhere before the sun goes down everything gets questioned. This pattern is the saboteur archetype, and it is in all of us.
The saboteur typically makes it presence known through a feeling or a thought that is rooted in fear. It may be a feeling of anxiety, doubt, of looking stupid, lack of confidence, or being afraid of failing. Sometimes we have a fear of succeeding because success will cause a change in our life. Regardless of the type of circumstance, change is hard! The first step in working with this archetype is recognition of its company as soon as possible. When we lack awareness the saboteur influences our thoughts and behavior, which causes our goals to become further out of reach. Once we notice the saboteur we can begin to work with it. This entails receiving the message of the presenting emotion by interviewing the feeling. What emotion are you? What triggers you? What do I need to know or understand?
When you are conscious of the answers, you can decide what to do next. It is when the saboteur works only in the unconscious you are at the mercy of its whims. Working with this archetype is powerful, but only after you have unlocked the door to awareness.
Once you have received the message, then you choose what to do with it. You always have a choice, it is within the present circumstances, but it is a choice. Sometimes the choice is “I am not going to make a decision about that today. I do not have enough information.” Okay, I am going to do what I can. I am going to do the laundry. I am going to take a bath. Keep the energy moving, and sometimes the situation just works itself out.
If the message is “I just don’t want to do this, but I have to” there is more work to do. Surrender to the emotion and accept the situation. In this place of acceptance ask yourself why you are not doing what you think you should be doing. Resisting an activity is not healthy. Perhaps the surrendering will work you into a place where you are happy to engage in the activity. The surrendering may show you a way to engage in the activity differently. Can you ask others to help you? Can you alter your work-out routine? The surrendering may tell you that you should stop doing this all together.
I have been asked to put together a small presentation for my staff. I am feeling much resistance even though in the past I enjoyed doing things like this. Now I feel more content expressing through writing and leading by example. As this realization has occurred I realize I have a choice in this situation. I can put together the information and ask someone else to present. What a relief! My energy now is so much lighter. Awareness combined with personal choice is celebrated.
The saboteur archetype holds the energy that either holds you back or moves you forward depending on if you are utilizing the light or the shadow. The saboteur is the key to empowerment as you learn to tap into the light and away from the shadow.
