The term “woosah” has come commonplace for reminding people to calm down and take a breath. Yet often being told to take a breath is not what you want to hear when you are in need of just that. While it is often said with the best of intentions from loving friends and family sometimes that only serves to exacerbate the situation. Instead of going ballistic on them, explore the more common reasons why “woosah” may not be working for you.
1. While a good deep exhale might be nice, it’s the breath IN that you’re struggling to take. Without taking a deep conscious inhale, there is nothing significant in your lungs to truly illicit the relaxing response of a good exhale.
2. The feeling that you are not being heard or taken seriously is often the root issue. If there is something stressing you out, take a moment to gather your thoughts into direct and understandable points. Then make sure you are presenting those points to either the person it directly applies to or to someone within your true support system. Now you will be heard and supported.
3. You are so used to living in a state of fight or flight response that “woosah” sounds more like a battle cry than a release. This may sound like a joke but in our fast paced society it is actually common to find people that live in a perpetual state of urgency. The idea of taking precious time just to breathe can sound overwhelming.
If you feel this way, you may want to seek out alternative ways to reduce stress such as hiring a life coach or practicing meditation.
While it may seem like there is not enough time in the day, research shows that people who meditate can focus better and actually are more productive than those who are living in stress.
4. The mere word “woosah” has you replaying the movie Bad Boys in your head. But hey, if it inspires laughter or even just gives a mini reprieve from the stressful situation you are in… that may be a good thing.
If “woosah” isn’t working for you, explore other stress reducing techniques to help ease your mind and USE them. There is a beautiful World of love all around you and it wants nothing more than to see you happy and successful.
