Bruce Almighty is the hilarious story of Bruce Nolan who has been given all of God’s powers to use as he wants to. Jim Carrey plays Bruce, who is given the gift of being the Supreme Being. The movie evokes the question: What would YOU do if you had all of God’s powers? It’s a dream come true for us all, is it not?! We all want to be able to have the power to create our lives as we wish…. and maybe we do! In any case, the movie is a comedy of course, but at the same time it touches on some deep themes about free will, god, and relationships. Let’s look at some of these deeper themes along with some favorite scenes from the film.
Bruce is given the power of the Creator, yet he is told from the outset he cannot interfere with a person’s free will. This is a good rule, and perhaps this is the deeper message behind it:: We can support people, we can impact them and uplift them, but we cannot “do it” for them. We play a part and can be of service, but we each are in charge of our own destiny and circumstances.
We each have Free Will. We are God’s in our own right.
“If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice. I will choose Free Will.” ~Rush
Morgan Freeman plays God with a calm sensitivity. He shares some great truths, like this one:
“You want to see a miracle, son? BE the miracle.”
He also manages to throw in some great humor too. We won’t give it away, in case you have not seen the movie before.

Defining Moments and Deep Questions in Bruce Almighty
There are many wonderful scenes and synchronicities that occur in the movie: Here are a few defining moments of dialogue:
“Bruce says: “Okay, prayer beads, ‘God, please give me a sign.’
[Truck with Danger signs passes him]
There is also a particularly poignant scene where Bruce gets a glimpse of all the many Prayer Requests going on.
Despite some seriousness, Bruce Nolan takes on his new powers with hilarious results. (Be sure to look for the gang of thugs he deals with and how he handles them!)
Bruce’s relationship with his wife, played wonderfully by Jennifer Aniston, changes throughout the film. Despite having all of God’s powers, she is still unhappy in the relationship. This provides the most challenging thing for Bruce. How can he “be God” but still have a bad relationship?
The film makes you reflect….and look at your life. Here are a few key questions to ponder:
How do you fix a bad relationship if God is not answering your prayers?
What are we really in control of? What are we not in control of?
When do we need to let go and surrender?
Those are just some of the fundamental questions Bruce Almighty deals with.
The really interesting thing about this movie is that it was directed by Tom Shadyac. Tom went on to have a spiritual awakening of sorts and made the film I Am He explores a lot of deep questions in that film. It is a brilliant documentary about what is important in life.
So check out Bruce Almighty! Jim Carrey is at is zaniest and quickest throughout.
There is a really funny scene with his co-anchor Evan (who later becomes Evan Almighty in the sequel) Bruce makes Evan mumble and mess up in front of everyone on TV. It will put you in stitches!
If you have seen it before, watch it again. You will notice and catch small things you may have missed the first go round. If you have not seen it, it’s worth a look.
