How Do You Forgive? || A Lively Q and A with the Author of Forgive to Win
“To forgive is merely to remember only the loving thoughts you gave in the past, and those that were given you. All the rest must be forgotten. Forgiveness is release from all illusions.” ~A Course in Miracles

Q and A with Walter E. Jacobson
Q: How did you come to write Forgive To Win — was there a defining moment that prompted you to sit down and start writing or were you motivated by a series of events?
Walter: I had the idea to write Forgive To Win! over twelve years ago. At that time it was simply to be a book about the power of forgiveness. It had nothing to do with overcoming self-sabotaging behaviors getting in the way of one’s success. Little did I know the work would expand and become more powerful. But despite being highly motivated to write my forgiveness book, I kept putting it off. I kept procrastinating.
I kept finding other things to do and other reasons for not buckling down and putting the necessary time into completing it. In the process of examining my resistance and trying to uncover the basis for my own self-sabotaging behaviors that kept me from doing the one thing I most wanted to do, I realized it was because of guilt, shame and self-loathing deeply embedded in my unconscious mind. This was an Aha! moment. Believing that I was not worthy or good enough, my subconscious mind was subverting my conscious efforts to succeed. I came to appreciate that if self-loathing was the problem, then self-loving was the solution, and that the way to love oneself and forgive oneself is to love and forgive others.
As I embarked on a program of being of service to others, esteeming others and forgiving others as best I could, unconditionally and without exception, I discovered that my world started getting better, my self-sabotaging behaviors diminished, and I actually started writing my book. Realizing that I had hit upon a universal solution to self-sabotaging behaviors that a great many people suffer from, I integrated what I had learned to overcome my own self-sabotage into the power of forgiveness principles I originally wanted to share with others.
Q: What do you hope readers will take away from Forgive to Win? What experiences and changes do you intend for people to have?
I hope people will apply and practice the principles, because if they do their lives will improve dramatically. When we get out of our egos and focus on “How can I help others?” rather than “What’s in it for me?, our world gets better. Giving opens doors that once were unavailable. When we are generous, compassionate, empathetic, releasing our judgments, accepting and forgiving others, our world gets better. My expectations are that if people practice my Forgiveness Diet on a daily basis, over time they will get out of their own way, they will stop their self-sabotaging behaviors, and they will attract positive, synergistic people and circumstances into their lives, which will enable them to manifest the stuff their dreams are made of.
Q: What books/authors have inspired you?
Wayne Dyer’s The Erroneous Zones was a very pivotal book early on in my personal development. Erich Fromm’s The Art of Loving had an impact on me too. Rollo May’s Love and Will. The Lazy Man’s Guide To Enlightenment by Thaddeus Golas. The Bible, particularly the sections that focus on Christ’s Sermon on the Mount. And above all else, A Course In Miracles, scribed by Helen Schucman.
Q: What do you say to people who had such a hard past that they feel they cannot forgive? Do you have some examples or stories?
Walter: I tell people who have been so abused, victimized and embittered to the point where they feel they cannot forgive that, “We forgive others for our own peace of mind.” I tell them that anger hurts US, and forgiveness heals US. I teach people in my book that when we refuse to forgive others we are perpetuating our victimhood, only now it is ourselves not anybody else doing the victimizing. When we refuse to forgive others we are keeping ourselves in an emotional prison, we are keeping ourselves stuck in the past, instead of being in the Eternal Now where we can access joy and contentment. When people have trouble forgiving I remind them that forgiveness has nothing to do with making others feel better about themselves. It’s about making us feel better about ourselves.
Q: Where do you plan to go from here?
Walter: I’m going to put together a Forgive To Win! workbook with a DVD that details the Forgiveness Diet. I’m going to give talks and workshops as well. The journey ahead is exciting and look forward to helping people allow, open and let go. It is my great pleasure to see them enjoy the lives they were meant to have. That is the power of forgiveness!
