One of the most influential, gentle, and fearless spiritual teachers out there is Thich Nhat Hanh. His wisdom, love and actions carve a path toward world peace and positive changes. For example, in his book Calming the Fearful Mind Thich Nhat Hahn suggests many ways to spark the healing of ourselves and the earth. He writes about creating a Council of Sages to open the door towards a shift in awareness. This would be a council of non-political people who can listen deeply to people who feel they are victims of social or political injustice. Let’s look closer at this paradigm shifting idea.

The Council of Sages would aid in deep healing through recognition of suffering. Such a council would give people the space, the invitation, and the courage to speak. There job is to bring spiritual power to meetings that have not recognized such power yet. They would act as “space holders,” taking no sides, putting aside right and wrong, and simply bearing witness to political opinions. They would be present as listeners and be a quiet part of each major political meeting. The creation of this council will change the world.

Because when we acknowledge suffering and see it with compassion, it stops. Suffering cannot survive when it is being loved and cradled. The deep listening sessions could be televised so all humanity can participate. This would become a collective spiritual practice and will lead to greater clarity. I think this is one of the most brilliant ideas Thich Nhat Hanh as come up with. The Council of Sages could then advise governmental leaders and play a part in decision making. Meditation would then becomes a world experience.

“We can help many people suffer less and realize a lot of happiness without being rich or influential. If love and compassion are in out hearts, every thought, word, and deed can bring about a miracle”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh

“We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realize.” ~Thich Nhat Han
